Background Tapes (VNRs and ANRs)

Background Tapes (or video news releases) are broadcast-quality tapes of pictures illustrating an issue, an organisation or a story. These tapes are loose edits and do not have voice-overs, music or visual effects. They consist of pictures shot in the style of a TV news crew that allow broadcasters to cut a story with up-to-date and relevant pictures.

The Background Tape may be a strategic release (Video News Release) focusing on a particular news story. The footage is likely to be time-sensitive and its release carefully orchestrated to make the most of an announcement.

Background Tapes may also be prepared as newsroom library tapes, containing the widest possible variety of pictures needed to represent the organisation’s messages. These BTs have considerable shelf life - often more than one year - and are designed to be used repeatedly by broadcasters to illustrate a host of stories throughout the year.

Distribution is carried out either by delivery of hard copy Beta-SP tapes to our newsroom targets, or via satellite feed and landline directly into the newsroom story exchange area. The decision on delivery is usually decided by time constraints and other logistics.

Media Impact maintains an updated database of broadcasters to target with video releases.

Your production and distribution team will include an experienced producer who has worked inside each of the commercial television networks and knows who to talk to, at what time and in a way which is acceptable to the news decision makers.

This approach also applies to radio stations (Audio News Release).

Again, the head of your project team will be an experienced former radio journalist/news director who oversees the delivery of news "grabs" in a format which encourages their repeated use.
